Actually, the original "Little Mermaid" is very...sad, and slightly gruesome. The mermaid is in love with a prince, but he scorns her and heads back to his kingdom to be a pretenstious little asshole.

Meanwhile, the mermaid is deeply in love, and believes that the prince loves her back (he led her on; sorta like a one-night stand). She trades most of her life span to the sea-witch to gain legs, and lungs that can breath oxygen. Then she wanders up to land.

Her body is frail, and she is very sickly. She collapses at an inn, where they allow her to live in the storage room. She STILL belives that the prince is looking for her. And during all that, the prince is gettin' around. In fact, he's getting married within a week.

On a roadtrip, traveling around, the prince stops once again at the seaport town where he nearly died, but was saved by an unknown person (he doesn't remember that it was the mermaid).

The mermaid hears the royal carriage's bells and horses, and rushes out to meet the prince. The prince doesn't remember her, and she perishes, dying out of heartbreak.

All her love for nothing.

It's either that or the prince never comes and she dies in a chair as a crippled woman...

Or she's mute! And her voice is in a music box! No, wait, that's the one with the magic fish that granted weeshes......

Anyway, I love faery tales. I read them all the time. ^_^ The Grimm Brothers are my favorites.
